Free web design & development books! (almost)
Jul 17th, 2010 - 0 Comments - Posted in: news
I have the habit of buying web design related books, but they often sit on my bookshelf collecting dust after I read them. Since I'm done with them, I thought I could pass a couple of these books on to someone who might find them useful...
Just Launched: CodeIgniterPodcast.com
Jul 8th, 2010 - 0 Comments - Posted in: news

At the CodeIgniter conference I attended at the beginning of May, I had the chance to meet both Jamie Rumbelow and Phil Sturgeon, who have recently started a podcast covering anything and everything to do with Ellis Lab's CodeIgniter PHP framework...
EECI 2010 Recap
Jun 6th, 2010 - 2 Comments - Posted in: news

The San Francisco Expression Engine/CodeIgniter conference wrapped up earlier this week, so I’m back in Chico doing my best to catch up on client work and personal projects.
I had mentioned previously that this event was going to be the first conference I’ve attended, and I found it both enjoyable and rewarding...

Although I am primarily involved in front end web design, I recently have been expanding my skills with PHP and CodeIgniter. Ideally, I'd like to be able to get more involved designing and developing dynamic web applications -- websites that have more advanced functionality than simple static websites...
New Office (and Kitties!)
Aug 16th, 2009 - 8 Comments - Posted in: news

This isn't exactly web design related, but I did want to post a couple photos of my new office in Northern California now that I am fully settled. It's not quite fully decorated yet (if anyone has suggestions/links to interesting artwork, let me know) but it is much more confortable and better set up than my previous one. Special thanks to IKEA for most of the furniture -- I managed to spend a good amount there setting things up...
Temporary Leave of Absence

I thought it would be important to note — I am in the process of moving and doing some international traveling, so I probably won't be updating my portfolio or blog for a little bit...
Can I call myself an "award winning designer" now?

I just thought I should mention...
Right after I launched my redesigned website in January 09, I also submitted it to the Media Arts Award Competition. This competition was limited to High School and Community College students from California, and awards were given out in a variety of categories, including digital imagery, animation, graphic design and website design...
Blog Relaunch

Testing, 1, 2, 3....
Just about a month after FalkenCreative.com went live, I've finished coding and implementing a basic blogging system for the Journal section of this site. Although it is not and probably never will be as nice as something like Wordpress, it has been a good experience developing something completely from scratch. I've definitely been able to expand my PHP knowledge, and figuring out how to put together a full, working application has been invaluable...
A Backhanded Compliment...

Perhaps you've heard the quote "good designers copy, great designers steal." Attributed to Pablo Picasso, it's often referred to when discussing where designers come up with the ideas for their designs. I'll be the first to admit--design doesn't come from nowhere. But, at least for me, there is a definite line between being inspired by another design and blatantly copying it.
It's unfortunate, but if something is online, there is always the chance that someone will come along and take it and claim it as their own work...

This site has been live just over two weeks, and I'm excited to note that quite a few CSS and design galleries have featured my site! Thanks to everyone who has dropped by, and especially to those who have taken the time to email me and send me their comments or compliments...
FalkenCreative.com Relaunched

A new year, a new website
After nearly a year entirely too long, Falken Creative v2.0 is ready to go... just in time for the New Year! This has been a personal project that I have been working on and off for the last couple months, between client work and my other activities, and I'm proud to be able to finally release it to the public. It's taken a while, but hopefully the wait has been worth it...
Killersites Forums Re-Reskinned
Dec 25th, 2008 - 0 Comments - Posted in: news
A quick comment... With the help of Stefan Mischook from KillerSites, I just completed a quick volunteer project—re-skinning the new KillerSites web design forums. I'm a moderator and frequent poster, so I was glad to help out...
Hello World!
Dec 24th, 2008 - 0 Comments - Posted in: news
Welcome to version 2 of my online portfolio! This is just an obligatory "Hello world!" first post, making sure everything is set up and functioning correctly. I realize that some areas of the site, especially the portfolio section, are a bit light on content, something I plan to address in the near future. Please check back soon!
